The ASSA Albemarle Challenge Regatta is organized by members of the Albemarle Sound Sailing Association. Members are Colington Yacht Club, Edenton Yacht Club, Osprey Yacht Club, and Pasquotank River Yacht club. The regatta is open to all ASSA keel boats with a valid PHRF rating. Visiting race boats will be allowed to dock their boats free of charge at the Albemarle Plantation Marina (if slips are available) on the Sunday before the regatta and must depart the Sat following the regatta. Boats given slips must register with the Dockmaster and show proof of insurance. An anchorage exists close to the marina, and the Dockmaster will make a launch service available.
The Osprey Yacht Club and Albemarle Plantation Marina hosted the Albemarle Challenge Cup Sailing Regatta October 7 – 9. OYC Commodore Kathy Hotz and Linda Kabul organized Thursday’s welcome Reception and Docktails, and the awards dinner Sunday. Michael McGauvran, Regatta and ASSA Co-Chair organized the mark and committee boats, getting the race committee together, on-water activities and the Dockside pizza buffet/live music event. Bruce Behrend, ASSA Co-Chair handled the budget and brought in over $1,000 in sponsors. AP Marina Dockmaster JE Darnell did a superb job assigning slips and coordinating the visiting boats. Many other OYC members and AP staff contributed critical support to make the Regatta events happen safely and on-time. Special thanks to Perquimans County Water Rescue providing emergency services.
The Albemarle Sound Sailing Association (ASSA) Event Committee Chairman was Greg Florence and the Principal Race Officer was Greg Duncan. (ASSA) member clubs are Colington Yacht Club, Edenton Yacht Club, Osprey Yacht Club, and Pasquotank River Yacht Club. The Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) is owned by the United States Sailing Association which sanctions regional authorities to administer the national rule and develop regional by-laws. Handicaps are assigned to a given production class considering predominant local conditions and the handicapper’s experience in handicapping similar boats. Scoring options include Time-on-Distance or Time-on-Time.
The Regatta had a 20-boat fleet that sailed three drop mark races on Friday, two longer middle-distance drop mark races on Saturday, and one distance race around government and drop marks in light air on Sunday.
