The ASSA Albemarle Challenge Regatta is organized by members of the Albemarle Sound Sailing Association. Members are Colington Yacht Club, Edenton Yacht Club, Osprey Yacht Club, Pasquotank River Yacht Club, and Roanoke Island Yacht Club. The regatta is open to all ASSA keel boats with a valid PHRF rating. Visiting race boats will be allowed to dock their boats free of charge at the Albemarle Plantation Marina (if slips are available) on the Sunday before the regatta and must depart the Sat following the regatta. Boats given slips must register with the Dockmaster and show proof of insurance. An anchorage exists close to the marina, and the Dockmaster will make a launch service available.
The 2024 Albemarle Challenge Cup Sailing Regatta was held at Albemarle Plantation, Hertford, NC, September 26-29, 2024, and hosted by the Osprey Yacht Club and Albemarle Plantation Marina.
Twenty-one boats participated in four tightly grouped classes which produced spirited and close racing. Skippers and crew were challenged by blustery conditions on Friday with effects from Hurricane Helene, far inland. On Saturday and Sunday, the challenges kept coming with light winds, and sometimes no wind. One pursuit chase race and three “around the buoy” races were completed, and great food and music were enjoyed during evening hospitality events.
